So the big girl bed debate actually happened quite a few weeks ago, but with everything going on, and my lack of blogging due to my addiction to Dexter, I never did it.
So now that i have challenged myself to blog everyday, it definately gives me the opportunity to catch up on some missed posts.
So several weeks ago, Mikael and I were sitting on the couch discussing, little Miss Maile. Which we often do, and I brought up the fact that I though Maile was getting tired of her bed time routine. She was seeming disinterested in stories and songs, and didn’t want to be held at all during the process. So that led us to talk about the BIG GIRL BED. Maile has never ever shown any interest in getting out of her crib, in fact she LOVES her crib. She’s happy as a lark in that “little cage”, and will play happily before bed, and when she gets up in the morning. We were happy with the crib still because we could feel secure that she was safe and sound and not running around her room getting into mischief when she should be sleeping. However, we had a realization that it had to be done, and now was as good a time as ever. We picked out a bed, and decided to get her a full size bed Quite HUGE for a little Maile but we figured it would last her until she’s pretty much out of the house.
So about two weeks ago we set up the new bed, and took down the crib, which Maile was sad to see go. She kept saying “ I love my cwib” “It’s my favorite cwib” but she seemed excited enough about the big girl bed to not care too much. Once the crib was down, we knew we had committed to this and there was no turning back. The first night was a little rough to get her calmed down enough to go to sleep, but she slept well once she was asleep and didn’t climb out of bed while she was playing before bed, and when she woke up in the morning. So far so good. I think we were more paranoid about her falling out of the bed, and her playing with something she shouldn’t be that we kept checking on her every 10 mins. And that’s pretty much how it went for the rest of the week. We would check on her less and less, as we got more confident that she was ok. It always took a little long to get her down, but once we thought about it. It always took awhile for Maile to go down, she always had to talk it out, or play a little before she could unwind enough to go to sleep. So really there was no difference. Except the fact now that she can get out of bed, and she does on occasion, but for the most part she stays in it. The morning isn’t much different either, she still calls for us when she’s up, and stays in bed until we go get her. I know that will probably change over time, but for right now I’m good with it.
I really can’t believe how easy the change was. I guess she was and still is comfortable with her routine, and is keeping it pretty much the same. Which is alright with us.
Bed Time Routine is a little different, we read books in bed now, and she has taken to reading to us instead of us reading to her. Her favorite book is the Little Critters collection, she knows most of them by heart, and can recite them by page. She hates to go in order though so she’ll read on page of one story then flip 10 pages and read that page of another story and so on and so on.
We still do songs, and rub her head (by request) but she does seem to be a little bit more rowdy at bedtime, which is quite frustrating at times. We have listening problems, which all 2 yr olds have, and we get ants in our pants and can’t seem to sit still for 1 sec. So we are working on those, and I’m sure they’ll come with time. Right now we just breath, and repeat, and repeat, and repeat.
Goodbye Crib! Hello Big Girl Bed!
